California strawberries clear Olympic hurdle

Mexican woman fights off lion with machete
ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) - A Mexican woman says she fought a 500-pound lion with a machete near the resort city of Acapulco and scared him away. Celsa Aleman said she and her 7-year-old niece were riding a donkey Monday along a road when the lion went after the animal's legs.

Tropical Storm Hernan gains strength in Pacific
MIAMI (AP) - Forecasters say Tropical Storm Hernan has gained strength since forming far off Mexico's Pacific coast. According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the storm's maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 mph. Additional strengthening is expected and the storm could become a hurricane within the next few days.

Oregon issues first report on state chemical use
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - More than 40 million pounds of pesticides and herbicides were used in Oregon's farms, forests and fields last year, with potato fields getting the biggest dose, according to the state's first tabulation of chemical use.
