FindLaw's Tarnished Twenty...

Number 2

United States Naval Academy

When I took this job, I never - not in a million years - would have guessed that the Naval Academy would have finished second in the Final Poll. But then again, I never thought that Mark Wahlberg could actually act. Consider me corrected on both fronts. Yet, there is really nothing humorous that can be said about the situation the Midshipmen find themselves in at present. If you ever wondered why the Naval Academy has a goat for its mascot, look no further.

All joking aside, 3 members of the Navy football team are in some very serious trouble for an event that, if substantiated, would be a devastating blow not only to the young men themselves, but to the Naval Academy's proud tradition of excellence.

The incident in question transpired at an off-campus party where, according to police reports, 20-year old junior Midshipwoman, who had reportedly passed out from too many drinks, awoke to find that she had been raped by three members of the Midshipmen football squad. But the defendants, Cordrea "Dre" Brittingham, Arion "Bas" Williams and Shaka Martin, all say the encounter was consensual. They were all suspended.

To make matters worse, a fourth Midshipman, starting wide receiver Brandon Rampani, was recently suspended for the season, for violating team rules by returning to the Naval Academy from downtown Annapolis in an inebriated state.

It's tough to slap the Number Two ranking on a school that in general produces high-class men and women, including their student athletes. However, the Naval Academy can consider itself in a higher echelon of schools that are held to higher standards. In doing so, and considering the gravity of the aforementioned events, Navy is fortunate that they didn't come away with the Tarnished Twenty Title this year.
