A very, very wise Third Year Law Student looking for employment in the San Francisco Bay Area once said, "Second chances are allowable. Fourth chances land you on the Tarnished Twenty." Nothing epitomizes the spirit of the Tarnished Twenty better than Markergate 2000, a debacle so completely ridiculous that it secures CSU a spot in the Final Tarnished Twenty.
Two days before the Rams' opening game of the year, Back-up quarterback Steve Cutlip was arrested for shoplifting from a Fort Collins discount store. The pilfered items: $4.49 worth of markers. This was Cutlip's fourth arrest in the past 17 months:
1) How many arrests does it take for the CSU staff to remove a player from the team? Or are they following a Bowden-esque regimen of having players ascend nearby mountain ranges repeatedly?
2) I got a free highlighter upon commencing law school. Please, please tell me that I'm missing something here. And by the way, what kind of class at CSU requires the use of markers? (I'm just assuming that Cutlip is not an art major-correct me if I'm wrong here.)
3) Along the lines of #2, I had a cousin who attended Colorado State and can attest to the fact that Fort Collins is a beautiful town filled with numerous establishments that are friendly, economical, and well stocked. There certainly wasn't a marker shortage the last time I was there. So I ask, why is Cutlip hoarding them? Anyone?
Forgive me for all of these questions. It's just that the Rams' decision to reinstate him to their team, if he makes up his classes for the summer (Cutlip had initially been suspended from school), has marked up their reputation to the point where not even the best erase job can overcome the Tarnish they've managed to chalk up.
CSU has made it clear: Football success is more important than academic rules. In any case, congrats to the Rams on turning the Mountain West into the Markered Worst!
